FEATURES
Transforming Communities Through Tennis
The Impact of the GDI and LTA Tennis Foundation Partnership
At Global Diabetes Initiatives (GDI), we believe that improving health means creating opportunities for people to become active, connected and inspired.
Our partnership with the LTA Tennis Foundation demonstrates how community sport can improve physical health, support mental wellbeing, reduce social isolation and bring people together.
For the past year, GDI has delivered free community tennis sessions through the Serve for Life programme. The sessions welcome people of all ages and abilities, regardless of their previous experience or financial circumstances.
The programme has particularly benefited people from underserved communities, many of whom had never played tennis before.
Opportunities Beyond the Tennis Court
Through the support of the LTA Tennis Foundation, GDI members, volunteers and community participants also received complimentary tickets to some of the UK’s leading professional tennis tournaments.
These included:
The Wimbledon Championships
The Queen’s Championships
Eastbourne International
Nottingham Open
Ilkley Trophy
Roehampton Championships
For many participants, it was their first experience of attending a professional tennis tournament. These visits broadened their horizons and inspired greater interest in tennis, sport and physical activity.
An Unforgettable Wimbledon Experience
A major highlight was receiving two tickets to The Championships, Wimbledon, giving members of the GDI community an opportunity to experience one of the world’s most famous sporting events.
Watching world-class tennis on Centre Court was an unforgettable experience. The skill, discipline and determination of the players inspired our members both on and beyond the tennis court.
For those attending, Wimbledon had previously felt like a distant dream. The support of the LTA Tennis Foundation helped make that dream a reality and created memories that will last a lifetime.
The benefits of the partnership have extended far beyond attending tournaments.
Participants returned feeling motivated to improve their tennis skills, attend regular sessions and encourage their families and friends to become involved.
The programme has contributed to:
Increased participation in weekly community tennis sessions
Greater physical activity among adults, families and older people
Improved mental and emotional wellbeing
Reduced social isolation
Increased confidence and social connection
Greater awareness that tennis is for everyone
More opportunities for volunteering and community involvement
For people living with, or at risk of, long-term health conditions such as diabetes, tennis provides an enjoyable and sustainable way to remain active and support overall wellbeing.
What began as an opportunity to introduce people to tennis has developed into a programme that promotes healthier lifestyles, builds confidence and strengthens community relationships.
Many people who initially joined the programme out of curiosity have become regular participants, volunteers and ambassadors, encouraging others to embrace active living.
Looking Ahead
GDI is committed to continuing its work with the LTA Tennis Foundation, expanding access to tennis and creating more opportunities for communities to improve their health through sport.
We sincerely thank the LTA Tennis Foundation for its continued investment, partnership and belief in the power of community organisations to transform lives.
Its support has enabled hundreds of people to access free tennis sessions and experience professional tennis, creating memories and opportunities that will inspire our communities for years to come.
Together, we are demonstrating that tennis is more than a sport it is a catalyst for healthier lives, stronger communities and brighter futures.

Our Vision
The Serve for Life Tennis Project is built on a simple but powerful idea:
Play today, prevent tomorrow.
By making tennis accessible within the community, we aim to:
- Reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes through regular physical activity
- Promote mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation
- Encourage long-term healthy behaviour change
- Create inclusive opportunities for people who may not traditionally engage in sport
Physical inactivity is one of the key risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. The Serve for Life Tennis Project addresses this challenge by embedding regular, enjoyable physical activity within the community.
- Through consistent participation, individuals are:
- Increasing their physical activity levels
- Improving cardiovascular health
- Supporting better blood glucose regulation
- Enhancing their overall wellbeing
Importantly, the project also creates space for conversations around health, empowering individuals to take control of their wellbeing in a non-clinical, supportive setting.

Beyond the physical benefits, the project fosters a strong sense of community. Participants often describe the sessions as more than just sport—they are a place to connect, share experiences, and feel supported.
This social element plays a vital role in sustaining engagement and improving mental health outcomes, particularly for those who may be isolated or at risk.
